Here's a good one - this guy, Mike, has a site that he's maintained for eleven years, nearly twelve, and the entire site is all about how the guy who does the cartoon 'The Quigmans' is a liar, thief and hack.
I can't believe any one cares about the guy who does the quigmans. But, I guess if that guy stole from me, I might be upset.
It's kind of amazing.
I sent him an email telling him that I thought it was amazing. I wonder if he'll know that I was being sincere- that I think it's a good thing to do well, if you're going to do it. Or, if he'll start a site telling no one that I'm a bad person.
I guess we'll have to wait and see.
An Article in The New Yorker,The Darkening Sea by Elizbeth Kolbert, is about the destruction of the ocean. Did you know that most of the CO2 emissions end up in the oceans? Yup. Did you know that the damage it's doing is already evident and in fifty years there is likely to be the complete destruction of the reef systems and the end of the million or so species that rely on the reef system? Again, yup. Is there anything we can do to stop the complete destruction of the oceans in our lifetime? (insert that cricket sound here).
Some have asked what I mean by saying that hegemony is the opposing force to environmentalism. It's simple, we have consciously elected people to government whom we are sure will take care of us. We are not going to elect people who are going to tell us to stop what we're doing and reconsider the way we live to end the eminent destruction of the planet. We, as voters, will ALWAYS elect, so to speak, to take the path of least resistance. In the case of the last president, 43, that path ran straight through Afghanistan and into Iraq, turning the gravestones of some 700,000 people into the pavement of our road to the future. (d'you like how I kept up that metaphor?)
ON reading the latest issue of The New Yorker, in an article titled, The Darkening Sea by Elizbeth Kolbert, I was inspired to begin a series of articles on Hegemony v. Environmentalism. I have a pretty decent archive of articles I've saved at publications. And thought that, if anyone's out there who's interested in the competing ideas of hunger for American Power versus the destruction of the environment as the two major forces at work in the world today, they could follow along. It's interesting. I'm a bit detached in that I don't find the results of hegemony anything I could control and have really no intention of doing more than recycling paper and cans for the sake of the environment. I can talk a lot about doing more, as many people do. But, in truth, I'm going to sit back and watch and I might as well get used to that idea.
The principle idea behind the series is one of, here's something you can read about American Hegemony versus the idea of Environmentalism as the two opposing paths of the future. We all know how it's going to play out. So, I guess the idea behind the series is one of mental preparation. You and I, not our children, nor our grandchildren, are going to face the severe consequences of the winning idea - hegemony. We may, at some point in the future, fall victims to severe conservation efforts, but those will be the effect of continuing towards power at all costs for America. When I say power, I mean, capital-P Power.
My wife likes to think of it as 'Peak Oil.' I like to think of it as the frustrated lives of scientists standing on the shore and waving about frantically as they point to the oncoming hordes while everyone keeps whistling their favorite tune. I have yet to come up with anything shorter. Whistlingism? Ignoramusness?

Asteroids - talk about a way to make you feel small in an infinite universe! Except that this universe does, apparently have a center, but NO EDGES! So, it's almost like the real thing.
Space Invaders - Nothing says 80's (late 70's?) paranoia like a never-ending onslaught of identical creatures. Social, political, psychological all in one big, black, never-changing sky.
Pac-Man - I was THERE, man! When it all started. YOU don't know a FAD! A trend! Ha! And, the table version at the Pizza Hut was the perfectly sticky place to make time with a girl. That's what I call myspace. hubba-hubba.
Mission Control - only 'cuz you could pull the panel back on the arcade version, stick three drinking straws together, put a piece of gum on the end and carefully...carefully...pull quarters out of the tray from the guts of the machine. After a while, the edge of the panel at the screen was all black and tarry from the aging gum. mmm, black, aging gum...
Pong, dude. Dude. Man. We ain't skatin' today, man. We gotta beat Sean's score, dude. Killer... Pale and skinny, with aching thumbs, the single greatest distraction of an entire summer, I was hooked from the first moment.

Andy Kaufman - particularly "I'm From Hollywood" Not to start flaming, but in concept, it's a bigger gag than "Borat"
Not that 'Borat' wasn't the funniest thing I've seen since "I'm From Hollywood." It was.
Long Live Andy Kaufman!
Long Live Sasha Baron Cohen!
Long Live Comedy!
Long Live the Jews!
